Item description

Etching with stippling. This print shows the half-length figure of John of Habsburg, Archduke of Austria (Florence 1782 - Graz 1859), the thirteenth son of the then Grand Duke Leopold of Tuscany and Princess Marie-Louise of Spain, in an oval. He is portrayed frontally with his face turned slightly to the right. He is wearing a military uniform and the two decorations of the Order of the Golden Fleece and the Order of Maria Theresa are clearly visible on his chest in the centre. The dotted technique creates delicate passages of chiaroscuro that show all the details of the figure, enhancing the volumes and giving the expression proud serenity and noble elegance. The print is dated 1808, so the future archduke is 26 years old. Beyond the image at the bottom are the names of the inventor of the subject: Johan Georg Lumnitzer; that of the Polish engraver: Friedrich John; the title and the indication of the publisher: Wien bei Artaria and Camp 1808. Excellent impression. Very good state of preservation. Wide margins beyond the copper plate. Watermark: Inscription IMP. Another impression is kept at Buckingham Palace in London in the Royal Collection (RCIN 614005).
