SILVER Seller in Milano, Italy
This print depicts a rare view of the city of Lecco. The scene is animated, in the foreground on the left a young boy is clinging to the leg of his father who is talking to a woman with a basket on her head, next to placid cows grazing. It is a beautiful spring morning and the sun is hitting the slopes of the mountains (San Martino, the Rocca di Parè and Monte Moregallo), which are steeply sloping towards the rippling waters of the lake. Small and large boats sail on the water; the centre is occupied by the Azzone Visconti bridge. The precise chiaroscuro contrasts describe everything in detail and give us a complete view of the Adda, the city, the mountains and the open view towards Switzerland. At the bottom of the image "Dessiné d'apres Nature Lac de Como Gravé par A. Lanzani/Vue de Lecco/Milano chez Pierre e Joseph Vallardi Rue S. Margerita n 1101". Excellent impression. Very good state of preservation, large margins beyond the copper plate. Bibliography: Margheritis, Sinistri, Invernizzi, Peverelli, Como e Lecco nelle antiche stampe, p. 92. Engraver and draughtsman. From 1823 to 1825 he attended the Brera Academy, receiving prizes for some of his drawings. He specialised in engravings using the aquatint technique and in 1826 he collaborated on Ferrario's work, Il costume antico e moderno di tutti i popoli.
