Antonio Lanzani, Vue de Como, aquatint, 19th century
In this print we see a romantic view of the city of Como. The sun, now low in the sky, tepidly illuminates the valley with its lush and orderly vegetation. The viewer's gaze on the hill behind Villa Olmo extends beyond the villa and the vegetation, down to the calm waters of the lake and embraces the eastern shore with its houses and cathedral. Mountain ranges enclose the background while in the foreground on the right we see a farmer riding his horse up the ridge along a dirt road. The town appears calm and the silvery grey atmosphere, typical of the 19th century, enhances the architectural and landscape details. At the bottom of the image "Dessiné d'apres Nature Lac de Como Gravé par A. Lanzani/Vue de Como/Milano chez Pierre e Joseph Vallardi Rue S. Margherita n 1101". Pietro and Giuseppe founded their company of publishers and merchants in 1812 and dissolved it in 1818. The printing is therefore dated to those years. Engraver and draughtsman. From 1823 to 1825 he attended the Brera Academy of Fine Arts, receiving prizes for some of his drawings. He specialised in engravings using the aquatint technique and in 1826 he collaborated on Ferrario's work, Il costume antico e moderno di tutti i popoli (Ancient and modern customs of all peoples). Very good condition, except for a crease in the lower left white corner. Wide margins beyond the copper plate.
