Delightful and refined vase made of grey opaline glass; the grey colour in opaline glass is very difficult to achieve, because, unlike white, the opacifying substances have to be balanced with the glass in an absolutely perfect way; the shape of the vase was obtained by blowing, then while the body was still warm the round base of compact opaline glass was applied, then the whole was left to cool for several hours; Then a skilful painter-artist, using white and a little yellow enamel, meticulously hand-painted pretty leaves and delicate flowers in relief, then finished the rim of the vase with gold paint, at which point the object was put back into the kiln to vitrify the enamel of the decorations, the craftsman having created a special and unique object. It was made in Art Nouveau style in France between 1930 and 1932 in a workshop in Wimmenau, in the Vosges region, an area made famous by the important glassworks in the area (Saint-Louis, Lalique, etc.). The vase also has a wonderful surprise in store for us: when lit, it takes on a completely different colour and transparency from the original! By changing the intensity and angle of the light yourself, you can enhance the charm and beauty of this unusual and extraordinary object. Opaline is a slightly translucent glass, opacified with phosphates and chlorides of sodium and calcium with the addition of tin oxides and talc, resulting in various shades of colours from pastel to milky white; opaline glass is much less dense and opaque than milky glass (very similar to porcelain); opaline glass in the strictest sense is a French product which originated at the end of the 18th century - beginning of the 19th century in imitation of Murano and German semi-opaque glass from the 17th century and which had its moment of maximum splendour from 1820 to 1870 thanks to the achievements of French factories (Baccarat, Saint Louis and Choisy-le-Roy); from the 19th century onwards, opaline glass spread throughout the world with the production of handmade objects for everyday use. France, from ancient to modern times, is recognised as a producer of the best quality opaline glass. The vase is in excellent condition.
