Item description
Anthonie Waterloo (Lille 1610 - Utrecht 1690) was a Dutch landscape painter, son of a Flemish craftsman who fled to Amsterdam because of religious persecution. There is no information about his education and it is therefore possible that he was self-taught, but his activity as an art dealer put him in contact with many artists of his time from whom he learned. He is considered to be one of the first artists to make drawing his favourite language and was also a prolific engraver. It was thanks to his etchings, mainly of landscapes and views, that his name began to circulate and his drawings became increasingly popular. This print is part of the Six landscapes series and is number 1, as indicated by the engraved number in the top right-hand corner. With the use of a long, thick stroke we see a detailed description of a river landscape. On the left, the façade of a church peeps out from among the rich foliage of the trees. In the centre, nature is the protagonist, strong trunks reaching upwards and their branches covered with countless leaves, some of which are caught in the sun's rays, others left in the shade. At the bottom we can see a man with a basket on his shoulders walking along the path, following the course of the river. The strong chiaroscuro contrasts emphasise the strength of the almost untouched nature. The sky is furrowed by a light horizontal hatching that simulates clouds. Very good impression with intense blacks. Very good condition except for minimal thinning on the verso at the corners. . Trimmed at the copper stop. On the verso various inscriptions including the number 1590 and Chez Naudet au Louvre, 1817 (Lught 1937). Naudet was a Parisian publisher and dealer in drawings and prints active between 1763 and 1830. Condition: IV/IV with abraded inscription under the signature: R. & I. Ottens ex. and added parallel hatching along the lower left edge. Basan edition. Thick virgin paper. Bibliography: Hollstein 65; TIB .065 S4
