Item description

This gilded bronze mantel clock has a base decorated on the front with phytomorphic leaf motifs and a central floral element. It is supported by elaborate whirligig-feet that slim its shape. A large plinth rests on the plinth in which the dial is housed and to the side there is the figure of a young man leaning on the plinth. The clock's display in Roman numerals for the hours and Arabic one for the minutes bears the inscriptions "Lu. Lacroix H.er." at the top and "De S. A. I. Lu Prince Camille, A Turin." at the bottom. The artist is Louis Lacroix, who identifies himself as watchmaker to Prince Camillo of Turin, i.e., Camillo Borghese, Pauline's husband. Below the dial, in gilt and chiseled bronze, is a panoply with a basket overflowing with fruit and vegetables, above which are crossed a shovel and a litho, from which hang two rich plant garlands. On the side there is a mascaron with female features within a crown consisting of two cornucopias and laurel branches. To the left of the plinth is depicted a young man wearing a short cassock and a long shovel held in his hands, in a relaxed attitude and leaning with his left arm on the clock structure, above which is resting a bagpipe. The mechanism is original. The four-sided tops, also made of walnut, have an almond-shaped reserve in the center with floral decorations that is divided on the inside by two fans and a central rose window. The feet are in the shape of a truncated pyramid.
