Item description

Shaped 925 sterling silver casket with fine engraved decorations in plant motifs. Inside the case is vermeil silver. Engraved silver mark under base. 410 grams. The French term vermeil denotes a variety of gold-plated silver. The required characteristics for this material are a sterling silver base, coated with gold plating at least 10 karats and at least 1 1/2 microns thick. However, it is common to use 14-karat gold, with higher thicknesses. The chemical affinity between silver and gold gives the plating good strength qualities. Currently, plating is obtained by electrolysis. Originally, when this process was introduced in France in the mid-eighteenth century, fire gilding was carried out. Plating makes it possible to avoid the problems associated with the oxidation of silver, Vermeil being more expensive than silver is a material used to make fine objects (jewelry, medals, fountain pens, cutlery, toiletry sets, watches, coolers, snuff boxes, travel nécessaires, cc.). In fact, its cost is intermediate between that of its two constituent elements.
