MP1 Olivetti portable typewriter by Camillo Olivetti, 1930s
1932 - Olivetti MP1 (ICO) Olivetti MP1, an acronym for Portable Machine One, was the first portable typewriter marketed by Olivetti. Its name is Olivetti MP1 and not "The ICO" as many mistakenly call it, because of the flashy front shield containing the acronym, which stands for Ingegner Camillo Olivetti. But why do we find no model name written on the MP1? The reason is simple and is purely commercial.... What customer would ever have trusted to buy the first typewriter model from a little-known manufacturer when there were major, proven American brands on the market? Here it is that only a shrewd entrepreneur could conspicuously write Model No. 1 on his first typewriter, because it is an inscription that would go on to create uncertainty in the 'buyer.
