Two terracotta vases handmade in Caltagirone, a Sicilian city famous throughout the world for its ceramics. Moor heads are a symbol of Sicily, but they have a very old and important history behind them. A legend of passion and jealousy between two lovers. It is said that around the year 1000, during the Moorish domination of Sicily, a beautiful girl lived in Palermo who had a love affair with a Moor; the young woman discovered that her beloved had to return to the East where his wife and children were waiting for him. The girl indulged in a moment of jealousy and deadly rage by killing her Moor while he slept. She then cut off his head and created a sort of vase in which she planted a basil sprout that she tended day by day. Thanks to its intoxicating scent, the basil plant aroused the envy of the girl's neighbours who wasted no time in building earthenware pots with the same characteristics as the Moor's head.
