Item description

Louis XVI style stool in oak and Vienna straw. The legs, conical and elegantly fluted, are joined to the base by a well-designed and harmonious X-shaped element. The very solid structure is carved with simple, linear and refined motifs. The oval upper part that serves as a seat is in Vienna straw. The stool was made between 1880 and 1885 in an artisan workshop near Paris, certainly by a very skilled master cabinetmaker because this type of work requires a lot of experience and skill. The process of constructing the seat using equidistant holes and a woven plant material (drawn rattan) was known since Egyptian times (a stool was found in the tomb of the architect Kha dating back to 1600 BC), but it is from the middle of the 17th century which becomes popular all over the world. It was the Austro-Hungarian cabinetmaker Michael Thonet (father of bent wood) who in 1842 created chair no. 4 for the Daum café on Vienna's Kohlmarkt; but success came in 1859 when the Gebruder Thonet firm of Michael's sons presented chair no. 14 made of curved solid wood with straw seat: the famous "Viennese straw chair", today counted among the icons of the history of design, which soon spread throughout the world and takes its name from the headquarters of the famous Austrian company. Legend has it that, at the 1867 Paris Expo, chair no. 14 by Michael Thonet falls from the Eiffel Tower, from a height of 57 meters, remaining intact.
