Item description

Antique and rare Chinese ginger jar with lid; the jar has a hand-painted decoration on the front in cobalt blue under glass depicting an aquatic bird in a pond surrounded by lake plants, while the back has no decoration. The lid, also decorated, is flush with the outline of the vase and features a graceful teardrop-shaped knob for grip. The painted bird is highly stylised and it is not clear which breed it belongs to, but usually in China birds are symbols of wealth, traditionally considered to be the bearers of a happy announcement. On examining the vase, we can assess its entire workmanship: it has a somewhat rough but harmonious execution, the designs are simple and rustic, it has small black stains present almost everywhere due to imperfect firing and too rapid cooling, the glaze is not shiny, on the rim of the vase and on the lid one can see the old patina formed by ginger fumes. We also notice small rust inclusions due to the iron in the clay (it takes up to 100 years for this effect to occur). All these factors and the research we have done lead us to say that the vase was executed in an artistic-craftsmanlike manner and to date its execution with good approximation between 1862 and 1875 during the Qing dynasty and exactly in the reign of Emperor Tung Chih. It should be mentioned that Chinese porcelain handicraft production reached its peak during the Qing dynasty, with more than 100,000 porcelain craftsmen; porcelains from this era include 'blue and white', wuacai, 'sky blue' and sunsacaiect. During this period, owning Chinese porcelain was a source of great pride for the Chinese people and the rest of the world. Our vase is a magnificent example of craftsmanship, a small work of art, a historical testimony to those fascinating times. Measures diameter 22 cm, height 32 cm. Considering the workmanship and the era, the vase is in good condition. For all our shipments we use special packaging materials (wooden crates, polystyrene, etc.) for maximum protection and safety of the objects.
