Taccia table lamp with base in cast aluminium and chrome-plated brass, shade in blown glass and white lacquered aluminium, designed by Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni in 1962 for Flos, Italy. The manufacturer's label is visible inside the base of the lamp. Pier Giacomo Castiglioni was born in Milan in 1913. He graduated in Architecture from the Milan Polytechnic in 1937. After graduation, he began working with Luigi Caccia Dominioni and his brother Livio and in 1939 together they created the first radio set made of plastic materials. Immediately after the war, he began working closely with Achille. Their interests included Urban Planning, Architecture and Design, and they carried out an intense and varied professional activity, taking an active part in international cultural life: congresses, conferences and round tables, with a focus on Industrial Design. In 1956 he was among the founders of the ADI (Association for Industrial Design). His many interests also led Pier Giacomo Castiglioni into the field of teaching. From 1958 to 1968, he was professor of 'Architectural Composition' at the Faculty of Architecture of the Milan Polytechnic. He has received numerous awards, including: five Compassi d'Oro, Gran Premi della Triennale di Milano, won numerous international competitions and many of his works are exhibited in museums all over the world, including the MoMA in New York. He is internationally known for his objects in the field of lighting and furniture, as well as for his spectacular exhibition installations. He died in Milan in 1968. Achille Castiglioni was born in Milan in 1918. He graduated in Architecture from the Milan Polytechnic in 1944. As early as 1940 he dedicated himself to experimenting with industrial production, together with his brothers Livio and Pier Giacomo. Immediately after the war, he began working closely with Pier Giacomo. Their interests encompassed Urban Planning, Architecture and Design (carrying out research into forms, techniques and new materials, aimed at the development of an integral design process), and they carried out an intense and varied professional activity, taking an active part in international cultural life: congresses, conferences and round tables, with a focus on Industrial Design. In 1956 he was among the founders of the ADI (Association for Industrial Design). His many interests also led Achille Castiglioni into the field of teaching. From 1969 to 1993, he was professor of 'Industrial Design' first in the Faculty of Architecture at the Turin Polytechnic and then in Milan. He has received numerous awards, including: nine Compassi d'Oro, Gran Premi della Triennale di Milano, won numerous international competitions, was appointed Honorary Member of the Faculty of Royal Designers for Industry of the Royal Society of Art (London), was awarded an Honorary Degree in Industrial Design by the Royal College of Art (London), and was awarded an Honorary Degree in Industrial Design by the Milan Polytechnic. Many of his works are exhibited in museums all over the world and MoMA in New York has fourteen of them. Between 1984 and 1986, an exhibition entirely dedicated to his works began in Vienna, which was shown in major European museums. On the occasion of the 'Spring of Design' award, a solo exhibition was held in Barcelona in 1995, which was then shown all over the world until 1998. He is internationally known for his objects in the field of lighting and furniture, as well as for his spectacular exhibition installations.
