Item description

Gabriella (or D270 2) folding chair designed by Gio Ponti in the 1970s and produced in a limited edition of 100 pieces in 1991 by Paolo Pallucco. Steel structure, seat and backrest covered with black vinyl. This chair is a modern interpretation of the historic folding chairs praised for their mobility and functionality, which were revived and brought in line with European design of the 1960s-70s. Characterized by a modern, elegant silhouette and an unexpected proportion between the high back and shallow seat; these last ones together still manage to provide a comfortable seat. Bibliography: Gio Ponti, The Complete Work 1923-1978, Ponti, p. 245. Gio Ponti (1891-1979) is an icon of the modernist movement: a designer, architect, artist and publisher, he contributed significantly to the world of architecture and design with his extensive work designing furniture, ceramics, buildings and much more. In 1921 he began studying architecture at the Milan Polytechnic. From 1923 to 1930 he was artistic director of the Richard-Ginori porcelain factory. In 1927 he opened his first architectural studio together with Emilio Lancia, and in 1928 he founded Domus magazine, still considered one of the most influential European architecture and design magazines. When his collaboration with Emilio Lancia ended, he began working as an architect together with engineers Antonio Fornaroli and Eugenio Soncini. It was during this period that Ponti designed many of his most famous buildings, such as the Institute of Mathematics at the University of Rome, the First Montecatini Palace, the Marmont House, and Villa Donegani in Bordighera. The best known of his architectural works is the Pirelli Skyscraper, completed in Milan in 1956. He continued working into his eighties, completing such impressive works as the Gran Madre di Dio Co-cathedral in Taranto and the Denver Museum of Art. Ponti always took responsibility for the design of every aspect of his buildings, including interiors, lighting, and even glass elements and silverware. He breaks through boundaries and traditions, choosing instead an interdisciplinary approach that combines design, art, craftsmanship and architecture.
