SILVER Seller in Pistoia, Italy
Decorative round blue ceramic vase with marine-themed decorations on the surface such as fish, octopus and starfish. Made by Angelo Ungania in the 1940s, the maker's mark or signature is visible under the base. Born in Faenza in 1905, Angelo Ungania studied at the Royal School of Ceramics in his city. In the early 1920s he worked as a decorator with Paolo Zoli's 'La Faience' factory. In 1924 he worked at the 'Melandri-Focaccia' ceramics factory, collaborating with the company to introduce the casting technique to Faenza. In 1930 he collaborated with Pietro Melandri on the ceramic panel of the Madonna del Roseto, commissioned by the Ospedale degli Infermi in Faenza, placing his signature alongside that of the master. From the early 1930s, he began to travel around Italy, collaborating with various manufactures including the 'Cantagalli' in Florence, the 'Fanciullacci' in Montelupo Fiorentino, the 'Grace' in Deruta and the 'Salmandra' in Perugia. At the end of the decade, after collaborating for a period with the Faenza 'Casadio' factory, he moved to Milan where, in addition to teaching at the Royal Institute of Art, he opened a first kiln in partnership with the engineer Gabbanelli and then, having moved to Sesto San Giovanni, a second in collaboration with his wife, the ceramist Maria Moretta, whom he married in 1944. In his workshop in Sesto San Giovanni, he hosted many artists including Giuseppe Tampieri and Domenico Matteucci. In 1941, he won the Faenza Prize, which was also awarded to him the following year. At the end of the 1940s, he invited Lucio Fontana to create some works in his studio. In the 1950s he moved to Ruta di Camogli, in Liguria, where he set up a ceramics workshop in his villa. During his short stays in Faenza, Angelo Ungania occasionally collaborated with the 'Bottega Casadio' in Faenza. Angelo Ungania died in Ruta di Camogli in 1996.
