Item description

Chromolithography "L'heure du Berger" created by Hans Christiansen (Flensburg 1866 – Wiesbaden 1945). German painter and illustrator, Christiansen is one of the main artists of Jugendstil Art Nouveau. He initially trained as a decorative painter, in 1888 he enrolled at the School of Applied Arts in Munich. After a trip to Italy in 1889 he moved to Hamburg where he taught and specialized in decorative painting. Between 1896 and 1899 he was in Paris where he attended the Academie Julian and began collaborating with various magazines including l'Estampe moderne. The lithograph represents a young naked woman from behind who proceeds picking pink poppy flowers. The background is occupied by two profiles of green trees and a lemon yellow sky. The lithography was made for L'Estampe moderne, a magazine published in Paris by l'Imprimerie Champenois in monthly issues, each containing four prints, between May 1897 and April 1899. In particular, this subject is for issue no. 11 of March 1898. It is accompanied by a tissue paper bearing the title, the artist's name and a poem "La lune est rouge (…) c'est la nui" by Paul Verlaine. The editorial initiative, the result of a collaboration between the young Italian publisher Henri Piazza and the art critic Charles Masson, aimed to offer a wide audience access to the engraving market and raise awareness of the works of the most famous French artists. The circulation of the magazine is 2000 copies. Signature engraved inside the subject at the bottom right. Vividly colored impression on thick white paper, sheet applied to vintage cardboard. Excellent state of conservation. Embossed stamp lower right in the white margin of the Estampe moderne magazine.
