Item description

Ettore Cosomati (Naples 1873 - Milan 1960) Italian painter and engraver. Orphaned by both parents, he moved to Naples to live with his uncle Filippo Cosomati. He studied mathematics and accountancy, then from 1894 started travelling around Europe. In Paris he became interested in music, in Germany in 1897 he met the etcher Bernhard Mannfeld (Dresden 1848 - Frankfurt am Main 1925) who became his teacher. Tempera and oil paintings date back to the 1890s, his first solo exhibition in Milan dates back to 1923 and in this same year he participated in the 2nd Rome Biennale. He contributed to magazines and newspapers but never gave up engraving, in 1935, the Galleria Pesaro in Milan published a folder illustrating Italy through his woodcut interpretations. During the First World War, many of his plates were confiscated and melted down for war purposes. In 1923, Carlo Carrà wrote a monograph for the publisher Bottega di Poesia. The artist depicts a still image of Milanese life. The Verziere, the city market, animated on a sunny winter day. By the end of the 19th century, this area was characterised by a double row of locust trees, stalls in the centre and houses along the street. Interesting is the deep perspective cut that neglects the anecdotal data almost suggesting a setting where individuals act out their daily adventures. The silographic technique and the use of paper as a chromatic element give strength to the chiaroscuro. At the bottom left in pencil the numbering and title: 39/190 = I = Il Verziere; at the right the signature in pencil. The number I could indicate a first panel dedicated to the Verziere. Excellent impression. Very good state of preservation. Bibliography: A. Jelardi, Ettore Cosomati. Un artista di fama europea da San Marco dei Cavoti a Parigi, Francoforte, Zurigo, Londra e Milano, Realtà Sannita, 2019.
