Item description

Etchings "Collection of fifty theatrical scenes" by Antonio Basoli (Castelguelfo, 1774 – Bologna, 1848), 1810. Set designer, decorator and painter, a leading figure of Italian neoclassical painting. Basoli initially trained in his father's workshop, and from 1786 to 1794 he attended the Clementina Academy. Attending the workshop of Petronio Fancelli (1737 – 1800) was fundamental for his training as an ornamental artist. He worked for a short time at the Italian Theater in St. Petersburg. In 1801 he was called to Trieste to decorate three rooms in the Muratori house and once he returned to Bologna he became professor of ornamentation at the city Academy in 1803. In 1805 he found himself in Rome, a city that offered him many ideas, so much so that he returned with a large number of notes, drawings and books. Starting from 1796 and for over forty years he created, as a painter of theatrical scenes, a vast production that we know today thanks to the series of engravings by himself or his followers. He succeeds Alessandro Sanquirico as chief set designer at the Teatro alla Scala in Milan. This series, undated but commonly dated to 1810, is part of that large production of collections that the artist created to spread his fame and his thoughts, educate students and art lovers. The complete series consists of the frontispiece and 50 small-format scene engravings. Numbered at the bottom right, they have the title engraved at the bottom center beyond the framing frame. Landscapes, houses, architecture, gardens are described with a clear and decisive line, a wide range of portable ideas. Excellent impressions on ivory paper, wide editorial margins. Light homogeneous yellowing. The sheets are mounted in small modern walnut-colored frames.
