Faux bamboo frame with six English botanical prints by James Sowerby, 19th century
Wood washed and carved to resemble bamboo, essentially the process known as "faux bamboo". With this technique, the look of bamboo is created using hard, durable woods such as maple or oak; to achieve the desired effect, carving tools are used and then a varnish is used to improve the final appearance of the "faux bamboo". The prints are the work of James Sowerby (1757-1822), English naturalist and illustrator.
