Item description

Fascinating and rare pair of Louis Philippe "King" or "Antique Master" model armchairs. They are made of the best quality walnut. The comfortable backrest has an elaborate and refined design. The armrests have a pleasantly harmonious and elegant curved shape, in the upper part of the knuckles they have small protuberances for a better grip. The legs have a graceful and pleasant "cabriole" design and are connected to a wooden structure with a very particular curvilinear shape which forms the large and comfortable seat. They were made in Louis Philippe style between 1870 and 1880 in an artisan workshop in the municipality of Cantù (Lombardy, Italy), one of the most important artisan furniture production areas in the region; here there were in fact numerous manufacturers of luxury and designer furniture who created unique, tailor-made pieces, using fine materials and high-level craftsmanship techniques. The Louis Philippe style, developed in France in the mid-19th century, is characterized by solid shapes and refined decorations and aims to enhance the practicality and functionality of furniture, whose shapes are softened with rounded corners and rounded elements. The furniture produced in Louis Philippe style presents a wide variety of embellishments that recall various eras: Middle Ages, Renaissance and Second Empire, in each style something is taken and reworked according to the taste of the time. King/Antique Master chairs are generally larger than normal and would have been made for Masonic leaders, schoolmasters, council heads and heads of families; anyone who owned and sat in an armchair this type secured a position of authority over the group. In these sober and harmonious armchairs, the use of curved lines is skilfully emphasized in an interesting play of volumes and geometries, giving the object a timeless elegance capable of characterizing every room in the house. These armchairs have been completely restored, so they are in excellent condition; the walnut part was lacquered with burgundy paint while the seat was covered with a fine purple linen fabric. Seat height: 43 cm.
