Item description

Produced in Germany by Walther and Sohne of Radeberg, 1930s-1940s. The company was known for producing high-quality pressed glass. Some of their stained glass has been attributed to Sowerby of Gateshead. Walther sold its Cloud glass under the trade name ORALIT. The name is reminiscent of Davidson's ORA Red Cloud glass. It is unclear whether there was a commercial relationship between the two companies. It is more likely that Walther was trying to associate its products with Davidson's well-established Cloud glass range. The Oralit range appears to have been started in 1932, a few years after Davidson's introduction of ORA. The three-foot bowl has a smooth interior and an intricate moulded rim. It most likely had a central pelican-shaped element. This bowl is normally found in Cloud Glass without the central piece, like ours. As it is a period piece, it may show slight traces of use, such as a small defect on one foot, but overall it can be considered to be in excellent original condition and ready to become a household piece. Diameter 30 cm, height 9 cm.
