Item description

Cut and colored crystal pocket emptier designed by Pietro Chiesa for Fontana Arte, 1959. It is in excellent condition, as can be seen from the attached photos. We point out two tiny chips, very difficult to notice in the context. Pietro Chiesa, descendant of an illustrious Ticino family of artists, after a period of apprenticeship with the glassmaker Giannotti, opened his own glass-making workshop in 1921. In the early 1920s he participated in the Monza Biennale, the Venice Biennale, the Exposition des Arts Décoratifs in Paris and the exhibitions in Cologne and Barcelona. In his work he combines extreme modernity and high technical ability. He creates the windows of the Trieste Stock Exchange, those of the motor ship Victoria and the transatlantic Conte di Savoia. In 1932 he was called by Gio Ponti to share the artistic direction of the newly formed FontanaArte, a role that would give him the opportunity to express all his creativity, designing over a thousand different objects (furniture, tables, lamps, stained glass windows, art objects, etc.). Some of these pieces have entered the history of design and are still in production today, such as the Fontana curved table (1932), the Cartoccio vase (1932), the Luminator floor lamp (1933). FontanaArte, an Italian company founded in Milan in 1932 by Luigi Fontana and Gio Ponti, specializes in glass processing and the creation of furnishing accessories, becoming a point of reference in Italian design. Known for the processing of curved crystal and the production of lighting, it has gone through various artistic phases under the direction of illustrious names such as Ponti, Pietro Chiesa, Max Ingrand and Gae Aulenti. After various corporate changes, in 2016 it was acquired by the holding ItalianCreationGroup, continuing to represent excellence in the lighting and furniture sector with iconic and innovative pieces, maintaining a strong commitment to the environment.
