Jacob Philipp Hackert (continued)
Prenzlau, 1737 – Saint Peter of Careggi, 1807
View of the Castellammare shipyard with the launch of the Partenope vessel, Vesuvius in the background
Oil on canvas, cm. 52×52
Within gilded wooden frame
The scene depicted is a very specific episode in the history of the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies. It is in fact the launch of the imposing war vessel Partenope, pride of the Bourbon navy, on 16 August 1786.
The scene is set at the Castellammare shipyard and depicts the bay full of spectators watching the event.
The protagonist at the center of the composition is the majestic ship, at the stern of which the flag of the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies flies.
Following the style of Jacob Philipp Hackert, the painter captures a historical moment with an almost documentary precision, combined with a pictorial taste for landscape details and bright atmosphere.
Vesuvius is a landscape element and at the same time a symbol of the indissoluble bond between the Neapolitan territory and its culture.
This painting which is presented in the rare round format is therefore an important historical and artistic testimony, aimed at celebrating a significant event through a balanced composition rich in details.
Jacob Philipp Hackert (1737–1807) was a German painter, famous for his landscapes and maritime views, who found great success in the European artistic panorama of the 18th century.
Born in Prenzlau, Germany, he trained artistically in Berlin and perfected his style during stays in France and Italy.
He arrived in Naples in 1771, during a period of strong interest in art and culture from the Bourbon court.
Thanks to his growing fame, he was soon invited to work for Ferdinand IV of Bourbon, becoming the official court painter.
During his stay, Hackert created numerous paintings celebrating the Campania landscape and the successes of the Bourbon navy
