Splendid painting from the second half of the 19th century. Oil painting on panel signed lower left C. Huber, referable to the Austrian painter and graphic designer Carl Rudolf Huber (1839-1896), professor of fine arts at the Vienna Academy. This work of excellent pictorial quality fully represents Huber's stylistic signature, known above all for his popular, lively and ironic genre painting.
The scene shows a smiling friar caught in a moment of pleased repose. In his left hand he holds a bunch of keys, symbol of his profession and control of the cellar, while with his right he raises a glass of wine, enjoying the fruit of his labor with evident satisfaction.
Above a barrel, a wonderful decorated terracotta jug introduces a chromatic note that balances the warm tones of the composition. The painting is particularly attractive for collectors of nineteenth-century painting given the lively and original subject that celebrates the joy of living.
A work that can be easily placed in different parts of the house, ideal for a restaurant or historical song, giving the environment a tone of refined tradition and authentic hospitality. Spectacular contemporary frame in wood and plaster, highly decorated, with some signs of aging. Overall, the painting is in a good state of conservation. Light painting H 99.5 x W 68.5 cm.
