Refined 19th century interior scene. Oil on canvas, first canvas, signed G. Spangerberg on bottom right and dated 1886, referable to the German painter Gustav Adolf Spangenberg (1828-1891). The painting fully expresses the stylistic signature of its author, famous for his descriptive care of popular customs.
He trained at the Academy but also worked in Paris with Thomas Couture and some of his works are today exhibited at the National Gallery in Berlin. The sweet and playful tone of the composition blends with an impeccable pictorial rendering, the result of the great German school of the late nineteenth century. In the scene set in a tavern, a young woman in traditional clothing pours wine from a large barrel while a dwarf at her feet drinks from a mug.
The work reflects a tendency of the time to represent everyday scenes with a subtle social irony, a caricatural and ironic costume painting. The composition is then distinguished by the refined harmony of the tones, the clear design and the attention to detail. Perfect framework for a wine bar or historic cellar, ideal for classic or modern environments where you want to introduce a curious and theatrical note.
Spectacular wooden and plaster frame, highly decorative, with some signs of aging. Work with some small drops in color (see photo), overall in good state of conservation. Painting light H 83 x W 59 cm.
