Splendid 17th century religious painting. Oil work on canvas depicting the Virgin of Sorrows in the moment of compassion at Calvary, the expression and above all the hands crossed on the chest indicate a gesture of pain and at the same time of abandonment to the divine will.
A painting of strong emotional intensity, a subject much requested by private commissions in the Baroque era for domestic devotion. The painting, due to its style and chromatic choice, is located in central Italy, presumably from the Emilian school given the similarities with the works of Sassoferrato and Guido Reni.
A work of great pictorial quality capable of still speaking to the heart of the observer today, ideal for a classic environment or for a collection dedicated to seventeenth-century Italy. Wonderful 19th century wood and plaster frame, beautifully decorated, with some signs of aging.
The rectangular painting was inserted into the oval frame, adapting harmoniously and giving the work an even more intimate and scenographic presence. Painting already restored with relining, replacement of the frame and color recovery in small spots, overall in a good state of conservation. Painting light H 70 x W 57 cm.
