Splendid Italian painting from the 17th century. Oil work on canvas depicting a dramatic scene, a Saint tied up and presented to torture before imminent martyrdom. The composition is divided into two registers, at the bottom the mass of executioners, at the top the architectural structure which evokes an ancient Roman city. The scene is constructed with a strong theatrical sense with the young, half-naked saint at the centre, illuminated by a warm, grazing light that creates plasticity to sculpt the muscles.
The beauty of the Saint and above all the military clothes at his feet probably bring to mind Saint Sebastian, as he was a Roman soldier who became a martyr for having supported the Christians persecuted under the Emperor Diocletian. After being discovered he was tied to a tree (or post) and pierced by arrows by his own companions in arms. According to tradition, he survived this first death sentence, but was arrested again and killed by flagellation.
The style belongs to central Italian painting of the second half of the 17th century. The modulation of the warm tones, the golden luminosity and the compositional balance reveal the hand of a cultured artist, sensitive to Roman monumentality as much as to Bolognese grace. Ideal for classic or modern prestigious environments and perfect for high-period sacred art collections. Painting already restored with relining, replacement of the frame and color recovery in small spots. Overall in good state of conservation.
