Venetian school of the first half of the 17th century. Oil on copper work depicting the penitent Saint Mary Magdalene, an intense and fascinating subject. The Saint is generally identified with the penitent harlot described in the Gospel of Luke and according to the Golden Legend she retreated to pray in a cave in France.
Magdalene is represented in a delicately sensual way, with bare shoulders and covered only by a mat, her hands clasped in prayer, her gaze turned upwards with her face streaked with tears. Next to her we find her typical iconographic attributes, the crucifix, a memento mori skull, an open book and the jar of ointments.
Behind him we glimpse a splendid church, a spatial reference to his spiritual retreat in France. The composition is to be related to the Penitent Magdalene created around 1598 by the Venetian painter Domenico Tintoretto, son of the great master Jacopo Robusti, known as Tintoretto. The painting, now exhibited at the Capitoline Museums in Rome, enjoyed great success and reworkings by Italian and foreign artists.

Work that shows some signs of aging, overall in good state of conservation. Painting light H 18.5 x W 14 cm.
