Item description

Important Italian painting from the second half of the 18th century. Oil work on panel depicting the famous biblical episode of the crossing of the Jordan with the Ark of the Covenant. The people of Israel, led by Joshua into the promised land, cross the river while the waters, by divine intervention, stop and open to the passage of the ark of the covenant. The landscape is grand, with monumental rock masses and a golden sky that amplifies the solemnity of the event. The scene is theatrical, animated by soldiers, knights and priestly figures who give dynamism to the composition. From a chromatic point of view, the table stands out for a rich and balanced palette, in which warm and cold tones interact with great refinement. The gold background amplifies the solemnity of the scene and creates an enveloping and diffused light that unifies the entire composition. Work attributable to the great Italian painter Crescenzo Gamba (1749-1783). A pupil of Francesco Solimena, he was particularly active as a fresco painter at the service of royal commissions, such as for the Royal Palace of Caserta, and religious ones, such as for the Certosa di San Martino. Gamba was a great decorator of central Italy and executed numerous frescoes of great quality exhibiting an elegant rocaille style (The painting is not currently accompanied by expertise, but it is possible to request it upon payment of the relevant additional costs). Perfect framework for representative environments or prestigious professional studios. The gold background, in particular, dialogues magnificently with light walls, dark wood boiserie, and is further enhanced in conditions of warm, grazing light. Board with some small drops in color and signs of aging, overall in good state of conservation.
