Item description

Rare contemporary sacred art sculpture created in 1991 by the renowned Romanian artistic duo Victoria & Marian Zidaru. Leading figures in the post-communist artistic landscape, the Zidaru duo is internationally acclaimed for reinterpreting Byzantine iconography through a modern, spiritual plastic language. Their work has been featured in prestigious venues such as the Venice Biennale. This piece is not a mass-produced devotional item, but a unique work of artistic woodcarving. Entirely hand-carved from solid natural wood, the cross features a complex three-dimensional structure. The craftsmanship is visible on both the front and back, showing ritual engravings, symbolic graphic signs, and traces of natural pigments—distinctive elements of the archaic mysticism typical of the artists' production. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE & PROVENANCE The inscribed date "91" places this work at the height of Romania's spiritual and cultural rebirth following the fall of the regime. Authenticity and provenance are guaranteed by the original Etno Art Atelier tag (World Trade Plaza - Hotel Sofitel, Bucharest) still attached to the piece.
