Genoese school of the mid-17th century. Oil work on canvas depicting a religious subject of great charm, the adoration of the Magi. The composition is rich, theatrical and strongly narrative. The painting is set in a dim interior, illuminated by a warm light that converges on the protagonists. The Madonna, seated and wrapped in a splendid blue mantle with a pink tunic, supports the naked child, rendered with fleshy softness and childlike naturalness.
In front of them, a kneeling Wise King, caught in the act of offering, is depicted with an intense psychological surrender. Behind him the other Magi can be seen, with their crowns and rich oriental clothes. The scene is brought to life by a crowd of splendid secondary characters who help create depth and dynamism. Of great interest is the use of chiaroscuro, which models the volumes decisively but without harshness.
The shadows are warm, brown, and interact with a palette enriched by deep reds and golden ochres, creating a collected and solemn atmosphere.
