Pair of plaster Cherubs finished in imitation wood from the Baroque period, dating back to the 18th century, of Italian manufacture.
Very frequent in art since ancient times, the so-called cupids, or angels with the appearance of chubby children, have always been used as decorative elements.
In Baroque art they are widely spread especially in the ecclesiastical context, inside churches where, made of plaster, marble or wood, they were used in frames to embellish altars and organs and other architectural elements.
Their childlike appearance harks back to classical art, in fact the Greeks and Romans represented the infantile figure of Eros, the god of love, in this way.
The cherubs for sale are of excellent workmanship, as you can see from the photos they are slightly different from each other which indicates that they are not molds but that the sculptor shaped them both by hand.
On the back, probably during an old restoration, some hooks were added which are not contemporary with the sculptures but allow them to be hung safely.
