Item description

A highly decorative and finely carved pair of late 19th century stone sculptures depicting elegantly dressed female figures riding Qilin (Kilin) ​​mythical creatures. Executed in light stone with striking natural dark inclusions, the sculptures combine folkloric symbolism with an animated sculptural presence. The carvings show fine craftsmanship in the flowing drapery, stylized facial features, and openwork treatment surrounding the figures and creatures. The natural variegation of the stone, including black and darker mineral flecks, enhances the visual character of each piece and gives the pair a distinctive, organic look. Both sculptures are presented on mounted wooden plinths, which provide a warm contrast to the polished stone and enhance their display quality. The pair reads beautifully together and offers a strong decorative impact from multiple angles. A rare and visually appealing pair for collectors of Asian decorative arts, mythological subjects and ancient stone sculptures. Provenance: formerly in a private European collection; purchased in the 1920s on the antiques market in Vienna (Austria). The object has been in Europe for several decades.
