We are pleased to present this stunning 19th century oil on canvas. This magnificent large painting bears a signature at the bottom right: Watson W. Below, a not entirely legible date, perhaps 1896 (?). Signature referable to the painter William Watson Junior (1847–1921). The English Watson family is made up of three generations of artists influenced by Rosa Bonheur, a French animalist and realist painter, and by Sir Edwin Landseer, an English painter and sculptor known for his animal paintings. This painting is in fact a beautiful academic copy inspired by Rosa Bonheur's 1860 painting "The Highland Raid".
An extraordinary painting that celebrates the majesty of a herd of cattle. At the center of the scene is a herd of typical Scottish Highland cattle, characterized by long horns and thick coats. A majestic bull with a golden/light coat advances to the right, while next to him stands a dark and black bull facing forward, creating a strong color contrast. On the left, a flock of numerous sheep and goats with light, thick fur moves in close contact with the main herd. In the background, shepherds can be seen with the typical sticks to guide the animals. The surrounding landscape evokes Scottish moors and hills, under a partly cloudy blue sky on the right.
Animal painting was extremely popular in the 19th century. This painting reflects pure nineteenth-century realism, with meticulous attention to anatomical details and the texture of animal fur and wool. The artistic quality is excellent, with visible, soft and textural brushstrokes that capture the multiple shades of color.
This gorgeous painting is truly extraordinary. If you love 19th century animal paintings, you should definitely add this wonderful painting to your collection. A breathtaking work of art that will enchant your guests!
The painting is accompanied by a magnificent 20th century gilded wooden frame with relief decorations which completes it perfectly.
The painting is in excellent condition with two small restorations visible in the photos of the back of the canvas. A small restoration that does not compromise the quality of the work.
