Item description

The GE 1936, commonly known as the Keyhole Chair, was designed by Hans J. Wegner in 1944 for the Danish manufacturer Getama. Its defining feature is the distinctive keyhole-shaped opening in the backrest, a detail that gives the chair its name while emphasizing the lightness of the overall structure. The design reflects Wegner's philosophy of combining craftsmanship, functionality, and refined simplicity. The chair is crafted from solid oak, a material valued for its durability, strength, and attractive natural grain. The upholstered seat provides everyday comfort while complementing the warm character of the wooden frame. Carefully shaped armrests and a gently angled backrest create a relaxed seating position, making the chair equally suitable for dining, working, or occasional use. Although visually distinctive, the design remains understated and integrates naturally into a wide range of interiors. The frame has been professionally and carefully restored by removing old coatings, staining and finishing with varnish. The seat has been re-upholstered with a beige fabric made of a mixture of linen, cotton and viscose, reminiscent in its texture of materials originally used in the 1960s. Hans J. Wegner (1914–2007) is regarded as one of the leading figures of Danish Modern furniture design. Originally trained as a cabinetmaker, he designed more than 500 chairs during his career, many of which have become internationally recognised design classics. His work is celebrated for its craftsmanship, timeless proportions, and deep understanding of wood as a material. Founded in Denmark in 1899, Getama began as Gedsted Tang- og Madrasfabrik, producing mattresses filled with sea grass. During the mid-twentieth century, the company developed a close collaboration with Hans J. Wegner, becoming one of the principal manufacturers of his furniture. Today, Getama remains known for traditional Danish craftsmanship and the continued production of classic Scandinavian furniture designs. Seat height: 45 cm
