Japanese lacquered papier-mâché box with hand-painted decoration, Japan, 19th century. A refined black lacquered papier-mâché box adorned with a rich polychrome decoration depicting an interior scene with several figures dressed in traditional costumes. Executed in shades of gold, red, ochre, and cream, the decoration evokes Japanese prints of the period and tests to the artisanal skill of 19th-century Japanese workshops. The detailed composition, combined with the depth of the black lacquered background, gives this piece a high decorative quality. Originally intended for storing precious objects, letters, or small accessories, this box is now a remarkable collector's item and a testament to the aesthetics of Meiji-era Japan. Its charm lies as much in the delicacy of its decoration as in its antique patina, which underlines its authenticity and history.
