Oil on canvas. Central Italian School, 18th century.
The Madonna in Prayer, depicted with her hands clasped across her chest and her eyes cast downward as a sign of inner contemplation and isolation from the world around her, and without a halo to emphasize her humanity, was a subject widely painted in the 18th century for devotional purposes, particularly to recall Mary's role as mediator, bringing the prayers of humanity before the Lord.
The painting has been restored and relined in the past.
It is presented in a late 19th-century gilded wooden frame.
