Oil on panel.
This is a copy of the painting by David Teniers the Younger (1610-1690), housed in the Louvre.
It is signed David Teniers at the bottom right, and on the back is inscribed "D. Teniers 1671," suggesting a work proposed as an autograph by the Flemish painter, although this is not the case.
Numerous versions and variants are found in other museums and collections, as are several prints of the painting.
The scene depicts various people intent on performing acts of help to others, particularly those that are evangelically called works of mercy: feeding the hungry, giving drink to the thirsty, clothing the naked, sheltering pilgrims, visiting the sick, visiting the imprisoned, and burying the dead.
The painting is presented in an early 20th-century frame.
