Item description

Old Flemish painting of the 17th century. Oil painting on canvas depicting mythological subject Mercury and Argus by a good painterly hand. The giant Argus watched over the young Io, seduced by Jupiter and transformed into a heifer. The messenger of the gods put Argos to sleep with the hypnotic music of his flute and then beheaded him. A painting of great size and impact for antique dealers, interior decorators and collectors of old Flemish paintings. Richly carved and silvered 20th century wooden frame, beautifully decorated. Work that has undergone a conservative restoration, re-tinting, replacement of the frame and restoration of the colour in some points (see photo). Ideal painting to be placed in a living room or study, with good brightness and pleasant decoration. In good condition. Light painting H 102 x W 167 cm.
