Utagawa Hiroshige II, Tatsukushi Coast, ukiyo-e woodcut, 1862
This print is part of the Shokoku rokujuhakkei series, 68 views of the various provinces. It depicts the coast of Tatsukushi in the ancient province of Tosa. The protagonist of the print is the landscape and unspoilt nature, which is revealed to the viewer in bright colours. In the centre of these differently shaped rocks, shaped by the wind and the rippling waters of the ocean, we see a cave and two men standing next to it talking. Very good impression on chuban format, still visible the wood grain in the green board. Very good state of preservation, there is a small restoration in the lower right corner. Japanese painter and engraver, pupil of Utagawa Hiroshige (1797 - 1858), whose daughter he married and adopted her name on his death in 1858. He separated from her in 1865 and returned to sign his works under his original name Shigenobu. From his master he learned the art of engraving and above all he trained in ukiyo-e published in the Edo period between the 17th and 20th centuries.
