Item description

An important work, with a mythological subject, which is clearly similar to the paintings of Carlo Cignani (Bologna, 1628 - Forlì, 1719), both in terms of composition and style, and in the representation of the subject. Cignani, a classicist painter and pupil of Albani but with a strong innovative spirit, had a flourishing workshop. It is therefore likely that the painting, which shows many similarities with other works by the Bolognese painter, was executed in his workshop and under his supervision. It is worth noting, for example, the particular rendering of contrasts between light and shade that highlight the master's characteristic complexions. The painting can be dated to the end of the 17th century, when Cignani definitively moved his workshop to Forlì to take on the task of decorating the dome of the cathedral. The composition is centred around the figure of the young Bacchus, crowned with vine leaves and bunches of grapes, surrounded by fervent putti and musicians. This particular depiction of putti often recurs in the works of the Bolognese painter, as for example in the paintings of 'Bacchus and Erigon as children', in the Musei Civici in Pesaro and in the Museum Schloss Wilhelmshöhe, Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister in Kassel, Germany. The canvas is in a good state of conservation. Pictorial restoration, small and marginal colour falls, reversible restoration. The work is completed by a beautiful wooden frame, carved and gilded. Canvas measurements: 61.5 X 133 cm.
