Item description
Antique painting from the 17th century. Large oil painting on canvas, depicting Salome with the head of the Baptist. Salome's mother abandoned her husband and went to live with her brother-in-law, King Herod. John the Baptist publicly condemned the incident and was imprisoned. To please the beautiful Salome, Herod then had the Baptist beheaded. The scene takes place at night, in the light of a candle that irradiates the protagonists with extraordinary effects of light and shadow. Note the quality with which the muscular back of the man in the foreground and the women's robes are painted. An Italian painting of excellent pictorial quality and great impact, for antiquarians and collectors of Baroque painting in the taste of Caravaggio. Spectacular non-coeval frame in carved, lacquered and gilded wood, with some gilding losses. Work that has undergone restoration with re-staining, replacement of the frame and repainting in some places, overall in good state of preservation, with some colour falls (see photo). Light painting H 181 x W 135 cm.
