Old English painting dated 1762. Oil on canvas work initialed at lower left "J. B. J.," referable to John Baptist Jackson (1701 - 1780); lacking authentication. Depicting a religious subject, specifically the Baptism of Lydia by St. Paul in the city of Thyatira. Painting of excellent painterly hand, richly decorated on the front and in the background. Painting that has an inscription by the painter in the lower right-hand corner - "Ch. XVI, Ver. 14,15,16,17" (see photo) - referring to the biblical scene he depicted. Non-coeval, 20th-century wooden frame, nicely carved and gilded. Painting characterized by fabulous perspective, finely embellished with classical ruins, for antiquarians, interior decorators and collectors of sacred art. Painting that underwent conservation restoration, frame replacement and has been restretched during the 20th century. In good condition. Size without frame: 66 x 92 cm.
