The engraving is part of the Croquis du Front Italien series, consisting of 50 drypoints in which Bucci depicts scenes from the Italian front in the First World War. Through a nervous and lively trait, given by the drypoint technique, the observer is catapulted among the soldiers inside a trench. The chiaroscuro effects are strong and load the scene with pathos, the composition is marked by a darker area in the foreground while it is flooded with light in the background. The sequence of men caught all from behind and the features that characterize their figure reaffirm the perspective vanishing line. The choice of the observation point, highly perspective, could suggest that the artist was really in that position and decided, with rapidity and intuition, that he wanted to fix on the plate the essential features of the scene, the enveloping chiaroscuro. Signature, numbering 83/100 and title lower right in pencil En tranchée ouverte. Excellent impression, with intense tones. Excellent state of conservation. Wide margins beyond the copper stop.
