Mario Schifano (Homs 1934 - Rome 1998) The House, 1980 Coloured silkscreen print dimensions: 80 x 60 cm Italian painter, film producer and musician, one of the greatest representatives of the postmodern movement. Due to his unregulated lifestyle he was nicknamed the 'Maledetto' artist. He was born in Italian Libya, but settled permanently in Rome after the war. He initially followed in his father's footsteps by working as a restorer at the Etruscan museum of Villa Giulia, this was his entry into the art world. Initially adhering to the canons of Informal Art, he then joined the so-called Scuola di Piazza del Popolo, a group of artists and intellectuals who used to meet at the Caffè Rosati to discuss together with personalities such as Pasolini, Moravia and Fellini. As early as 1959 he exhibited all over the world, but 1962 was the important year for his artistic career because he participated in the New Realists exhibition at the Sidney Janis Gallery in New York. His works are exhibited alongside those of artists such as Andy Warhol (Pittsburgh 1928 - New York 1987) and Roy Lichtenstein (New York 1923 - New York 1997). From then on, pop art became his language, the pictorial surface was not considered in its three-dimensionality but as a flat screen on which the world was reflected. Between the 1970s and 1980s, he almost completely abandoned painting and devoted himself to the silkscreen reproduction of images. A recurring theme in Schifano's work: the representation of the house immersed in nature under a clear blue sky and close to mountain ranges. The very simple, immediate image nevertheless has a strong visual impact thanks to bright colour combinations that contribute to the construction of surfaces and volumes. Specimen signed and numbered 79/150 in pencil in the lower margin. Very good state of preservation.
