Religious painting from the 19th century, the Resurrection of Christ. Oil painting on panel depicting one of Rembrandt's most famous paintings in the manner of Rembrandt. In turn, the great Dutch painter was inspired for this composition by Titian's Assumption of the Virgin Mary. The Counter-Reformation had redefined iconography and the sacred scriptures had to be adhered to to the letter: Jesus will be taken up into heaven 40 days after his death, which is why the two moments, resurrection and ascension, should not be confused and should be depicted separately. The Angel suddenly appears in the midst of divine light and lifts the heavy stone of the tomb. The soldiers' reaction to the miracle is one of fear and dread, and this haphazard flight lends dynamism to the painting. The real protagonist, however, is the light as opposed to the depths of darkness. Beautifully decorated 20th century carved and gilded wooden frame. Painting that has undergone conservation restoration, palquetting (see photo on back) and colour restoration in places. Work in good state of preservation, with some signs of time. Light painting H 54 x W 42 cm
