PLATINUM Seller in Cuneo, Italy
Splendid Italian painting from the second half of the 17th century. Oil on canvas work of remarkable size and pictorial quality, depicting the love story between Rinaldo and Armida told in Gerusalemme liberata, the most important epic poem by Torquato Tasso. Armida has bewitched Rinaldo because of her beauty and especially because of a magic mirror, but she too has fallen in love with the hero. The soldier then abandons his duties as a crusader; in fact, the helmet and sword are at his feet. However, comrades-in-arms in the background arrive, who soon reveal to him that he is under a spell and bring him back to the Christian ranks. Wonderful landscape and classical-style architecture surrounding the characters. Painting restored with rintelo and color recovery in a few small spots, overall in excellent state of preservation. Beautifully decorated 20th-century carved and gilded wooden frame (bronze tint). Light painting H 114 x W 164 cm.
