Item description

Five delightful ceramic plates with rich cobalt blue decorations on a white background; three of the plates have a diameter of 30 cm: the two with a bird painted on the bottom surrounded by flowers and vine shoots but with different border decorations and the one with a star painted in the centre and a flowery border; the other two have a diameter of 33 cm and have a pomegranate design in the centre surrounded by vine shoots, both with different borders. They are all exclusively hand-painted and faithfully reproduce ancient Umbrian decorations from the 18th century; they were made between 1950 and 1954 in a small workshop in Deruta (Perugia-Italy). The ceramic mixture is coarse (see photo on the back of the plates), which is characteristic of Deruta ceramics because the entire production cycle of the objects is totally manual. We do not know why the inhabitants of Deruta started working with terracotta and producing pottery and ceramic artefacts, but we do know for certain that already in the Middle Ages the town was known for the production of high quality pottery; the earliest written sources date Deruta (Perugia) pottery to 1282. During the Renaissance, more than fifty kilns were active in Deruta, with which artists such as Perugino, Pinturicchio and Luca Signorelli collaborated. The skill of Deruta's craftsmen and ceramic artists has never diminished over time. At the beginning of the 20th century, a consortium was created that grouped together most of the workshops and the consortium itself guaranteed the quality of the objects produced. A trademark Ceramiche Deruta was also devised, but very often each craftsman did not brand his own objects in the knowledge that Deruta ceramics stood out from other productions in a strong and personal way. Our plates are in good condition. You can see that in each plate on the bottom (see photo) there are three points where the pottery seems chipped, these are the marks left by the iron supports on which the plates were placed when they came out of the kiln and were put to cool and fix the colour in small ventilated chambers. The measurements of two plates are diameter 33 cm, height 4 cm, the other three are diameter 30 cm, height 4 cm. For all shipments we use special packaging materials (wooden crates, polystyrene, etc.) for maximum protection and safety of the objects.
