The Hussar: oil painting on canvas by Giovan Francesco Gonzaga, made in the early 21th century. The work is signed on both the front and back. "Hussar" is a term of Serbian origin used to refer to a soldier belonging to the light cavalry unit. The artist (1921-2007) is descended from the Gonzaga family of Mantua. He studied Leonardo and Michelangelo while attending Castello Sforzesco and at the age of 20 left for the Russian Campaign with the "Savoia Cavalry" Regiment. This experience remains strongly imprinted in him, influencing his later production; in fact, among his favorite subjects are horses, knights and soldiers, as well as landscapes, portraits and still lifes.
