Lesbo table lamp by Angelo Mangiarotti for Artemide, 1960s (1966). Polished metal base and light diffuser consisting of a single hand-blown Murano glass element. Manufacturer's mark imprinted under the base. The shape of the diffuser and the peculiar white-transparent shades of the glass are obtained thanks to the skill of master glassmakers. The diffused light emitted by this lamp is perfect for creating an elegant and relaxing atmosphere. Angelo Mangiarotti was born in Milan on February 26, 1921. He graduated in Architecture in 1948 from the Milan Polytechnic. From 1953 to 1954 he worked in the United States; here he met Frank Lloyd Wright, Walter Gropius, Mies van der Rohe and Konrad Wachsmann. Once back, he opened an architectural firm together with Bruno Morassutti until 1960. In 1989 he founded Mangiarotti & Associates Office based in Tokyo. From 1986 to 1992 he is art director of Colle Cristalleria. In addition to his career as an architect he has an intense teaching activity carried out in several Italian and foreign universities: in 1953-1954 he is a visiting professor at the Institute of Design of the Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago; in 1963-1964 he teaches a course at the Istituto Superiore di Disegno Industriale in Venice; he is a visiting professor at the University of Hawaii in 1970, at the Ecole Politecnique Fédérale in Lausanne in 1974, and at the University of Adelaide and the South Australian Institute of Technology in Adelaide in 1976; in 1982 he was an adjunct professor at the Faculty of Architecture in Palermo; in 1983 he was an adjunct professor for the composition course at the Faculty of Architecture in Florence; in 1989-90 he was an adjunct professor in the graduate course in Industrial Design at the Faculty of Architecture of the Milan Polytechnic. He participates in numerous international seminars and conferences. In his design activity, whose theoretical foundations are expressed in the book "In the Name of Architecture" published in 1987, he wants to highlight the essential characteristics of each object. Architectural language becomes the expression of a new relationship between man and the environment. In his activity as a designer, Mangiarotti gives a very important role to plastic research; the objective of his research, always conducted with respect to the characteristics of Matter, is the definition of the Form of the object as a quality of Matter. Mangiarotti died in Milan on June 30, 2012.
