Etching depicting Saint Francis in the desert by Giovanni Francesco Guidalotti.
There is not much news of the engraver, who was active in the Bologna area around the 18th century.
In this translation print from a painting by Domenico Maria Viani (Bologna 1668 - Pistoia 1711) San Francesco is represented in full figure, seated on a rock with his face in contemplation towards a crucifix tied to a rock. The saint with an emaciated face wears a habit that leaves his bare feet uncovered. The hands clasped in prayer rest on a skull which is in turn placed on an open book. The long, sparse line describes the volumes, the cross-hatching creates deep contrasts in the shaded areas, the light comes from the right. Inscribed lower left: "M. Vianus pinx a destra Ioseph G. f.". In the lower area under the subject he dedicates: "All'ill.mo et ecc.mo. sig:e pron col il. sig. Giulio Cesare Claudini dell'una e l'altra Leg. dott. e di filosofia colleggiato". Giulio Cesare Claudini (Bologna 1550-1618) was a well-known professor of Logic, Philosophy and Medicine at the Bologna Studio. In the center noble coat of arms and further down on the left: "Luigi Guidotti forma in Bologna". Luigi Guidotti was an active printer in Bologna in the eighteenth century with a workshop "under the schools", he published engravings by many authors including F. A. Meloni, Agostino Carracci, G. M. Mitelli, Benedetto Montagna and G. M. Viani.
Great impression. Wide margins. Slight foxing and traces of scotch tape on the vertical margins only.
One specimen is kept in Bologna from the Lambertini collection.
